How To Improve Your SEO Rankings

We’ve previously discussed exactly what SEO is and how it works, but what about if you want to improve your SEO rankings? There are a number of ways available to improve where your site sits in Google’s search results. Whether you’re just starting out using SEO and want to know how to get started, or you’ve been at it for a while and are wondering why you’re not seeing much improvement, we’ve got you covered.

SEO is about more than keywords

There’s no denying that Google is the most powerful search engine in the world at this point, and it didn’t get there just by pointing users towards a keyword. Rather, Google’s popularity stems from the fact that it tries to point its users at content that it thinks you will find the most useful.

You need to understand what your potential customers want and then provide the information that they’re looking for. Keywords are still an essential part of SEO but they no longer work just on their own. Fortunately, though, this works out well for everyone, Google gets to provide a great user experience, the customer finds the information they need and you get to show that you have expertise in the area and begin building a relationship with a potential customer. This follows nicely to our next point:

Have a site that people want to link to

This doesn’t just refer to the quality of your content but to the quality of your links in general. For example, when linking to other sites, try to link within the text rather than simply typing “click here”. Linking from “web design Southampton” carries a lot more SEO clout than “click here” for example, and will improve your rankings as well as that of the site you’re linking to.

You also want to ensure that you’re producing content of a high enough quality to make people want to link to your site. If you come off as credible and like a person who knows what they’re talking about, people will link to your site as an authority on your subject. This does wonders for your rankings as well.

Consider text-only browsers

A lot of people forget to consider that there are still people who use text-only browsers. This means that they don’t see pictures and videos and only see… well, text. This is why you need to make sure that you’re describing all the images and videos on your site with alt-tags. This doesn’t just help Google to understand and index the media content but makes life a bit easier for people with text-only browsers, or even just slow internet connections.
